Poetry Out Loud Competition
Stage Left Players will host their first Poetry Out Loud Competition at 7 p.m. today at the Trinity Playhouse, 234 E. Lincoln Way in Lisbon. The Young Playwrights, Poets & Storytellers Project has met monthly since September where interested 7th to 12th graders have gathered to explore Literary Arts. During this time, two youth elected to participate in the Poetry Out Loud –a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.
Emily McNeal of Leetonia will recite Robert Frost’s “Acquainted with the Night” and Lulu Strong of Salem will recite Lord Byrons’ “She Walks in Beauty” by memory before three judges. They will be judged for their accuracy, understanding of the poem and how their recitation conveys that meaning with confidence and articulation. These two girls have become friends throughout the poetry analysis process, as well as the time they shared the stage together in the recent production of “Willy Wonka Jr.”
Executive Director Kandace Cleland learned about Poetry Out Loud while attending the Ohio Arts Impact Conference in October of 2022. “I could see the value in expanding Stage Left’s youth programming to include Literary Arts. Poetry Out Loud added more opportunities to help young people master public speaking skills and build self-confidence. The Ohio Arts Council has once again introduced us to amazing and free resources to enrich the lives of the youth in our community.”
The event is free and open to the public. For information, email StageLeftSeats@gmail.com.
SCCRCC nominations
The Southern Columbiana County Regional Chamber of Commerce (SCCRCC) is seeking nominations to the board of directors. Elections will be held at the Annual Meeting March 25 and results announced the same evening during the Chamber Banquet.
Managing a business, more than any other endeavor, demands immediate adaptive response to a changing future, continual recalculations, and an intuitive exercise in foresight. But without steady growth, innovative progress, and bold ideas, concepts such as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning in the business world.
It is a prime responsibility of the chamber to provide opportunity, and the obligation of business, and the duty of people, to share in that commitment. No prior board experience is required, just common sense, good judgment, and an interest to help lead in the enthusiasm and spirit of creating a positive community that fosters a healthy business environment.
Candidates may be residents of the surrounding counties in Ohio, West Virginia or Pennsylvania, and may be self-nominated or by a chamber member. However, all persons elected to the board of directors must be an active member of SCCRCC prior to election. Those who are not a current member, a Business Profile and Membership Application must be received not later than March 20.
The Board consists of not less than 11 and not more than 15 directors. Each director serves a one-year term but may serve without a limitation of terms. There are a maximum six positions up for election for the term April 2023 – March 2024, including the position of treasurer, elected by the directors. Anyone interested in becoming a candidate for the 2023/2024 board of directors should send an email notice to: office@sccregionalchamber.org to begin the nomination process.
Rodman Public Library will serve as a drop-off location for VITA
Rodman Public Library in Alliance will serve as a drop-off location for the United Way of Greater Stark County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Trained VITA volunteers help qualifying individuals file returns for free, looking for all possible deductions and credits. The free tax preparation service is available to households that earn less than $60,000 if filing single and under $90,000 if filing a joint return. Taxpayers with disabilities and those who speak limited English may also be eligible. VITA is now taking appointments to check for eligibility and to schedule drop-offs for February through April for the 2021 tax return season. An appointment is needed for all drop-offs. Those wishing to take advantage of the VITA program should visit uwstark.org/vita to download and print an IRS Intake Form and an IRS Consent Form. Both must be filled out so VITA volunteers can prepare and process taxes. A list of other required documents is also posted on the website. Those who would like information about the VITA program or those wishing to make an appointment should call 330-994-VITA (8482).
