Wabash captured a pair of victories on the opening day of the 2022 U.S. Marine Corps NWCA/NCAA Division III Multi-Division National Duals held in Louisville, Kentucky. The Little Giants advanced to Friday’s semifinal round with an 18-15 quarterfinal win against Baldwin Wallace after defeating Concordia College from Moorehead, Minnesota 22-18 in the opening round.
Maxwell Bishop stepped onto the mat for his 285-pound bout to close out the quarterfinal match against Baldwin Wallace with the team score tied a 15-15. The senior scored a first-round takedown on the way to a 6-2 victory to claim the final team points for the Little Giants to secure the three-point victory.
Carlos Champagne started the match against Baldwin Wallace with a 7-1 victory in his 125-pound bout. Blake McGee gave Wabash a 6-0 lead by scoring a 5-3 win at 133 pounds. Gavinn Alstott tacked on three more points for the Little Giants with his 8-6 victory at 141 pounds.
Kyle Hatch put Wabash in front 15-6 when he scored a pin just 1:28 into his 165-pound match. The Yellow Jackets picked up wins in the next three matches to even the score at 15-15 before Bishop’s four-point victory for the Little Giants.
Wabash turned in two shutout wins in the final matches of its opening competition against Concordia College to secure the 22-18 win and advance to the second round. Jack Heldt scored a 5-0 victory in the 197-pound bout before Bishop earned an escape in the second round and third-round takedown in his 285-pound bout to win 3-0.
Champagne opened the match at 125 pounds by scoring a 17-3 major decision. Alstott gave Wabash a 7-6 lead in the team scoring by picking up a 7-5 victory at 141 pounds.
Alex Barr scored the only pin of the match for Wabash with a fall at the 3:53 mark of his 149-pound bout. Hatch added an 8-5 victory at 165 pounds to put Wabash in front 16-12 before Concordia rallied with a pair of three-point wins to take an 18-16 lead before the wins by Heldt and Bishop gave Wabash the victory.
Wabash will face the Rochester Institute of Technology in Friday’s semifinal round at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to the championship bout at 3 p.m. with the winner competing in the third-place match.
