Archbishop Williams High’s Jack McCarthy has been voted the High School Football Defensive Player of the Week.
The senior, who received 59 percent of votes, starred in a ball-hawking performance by the Bishops. Williams had five interceptions in a 21-7 win over Bishop Feehan. McCarthy returned his interception 25 yards for a score.

And this week’s nominees are…
Shane Graham, Sr., East Bridgewater: Graham scored two defensive touchdowns (fumble and interception return) and scored in four different ways in a 30-20 win over Randolph. The quarterback/safety also threw and ran for scores.
Jerry Esposito and Jacob Moore, Rockland: Esposito booted the winning 35-yard field goal while Moore intercepted a pass with 23 seconds to seal a 17-14 win over Abington.
Tyler Cooley, Sr., Archbishop Williams: Cooley had 11 solo tackles in a 28-21 loss to Bishop Stang. Stang scored 21 points on defense.
Gordon Gozdeck, Sr., Lincoln-Sudbury: This senior captain and linebacker had nine tackles and an interception in the Warriors’ blowout win over Newton South.
Jeff Valentine, Sr., Algonquin: This senior defensive back had four pass breakups and a fumble recovery in Algonquin’s loss to Doherty.
Luke Herter, Jr., Ashland: This talented two-way player had 10 tackles on defense in the Clockers’ shutout win over Westwood. Herter also added a tossing touchdown and 114 passing yards from the QB position.
