A young man who was rushed to hospital in a ‘very serious’ condition with a gunshot wound to his chest called himself a cab after the shooting.
A gunman is on the run after a Tasmanian man was shot in the chest and then called himself a taxi.
The victim, aged 29, was taken to the Launceston General Hospital in a “very serious” condition and is undergoing surgery.
Police are working to identify the shooter and the weapon involved in the incident that happened at about 6.50am on Monday at a Bishops Drive address at Newnham, about 7km north of Launceston.
The two people are believed to be known to each other.
Officers closed off a portion of Bishops Drive as they examined the area, searching for the weapon.
Detective Inspector Craig Fox said witnesses heard arguing between two males at about 6.45am.
The victim, who was known to police, then presented to a taxi driver from the nearby parklands.
“We don’t know a great deal. This person who is at the hospital is not co-operating with us and hasn’t provided their version of events … it’s very frustrating,” Inspector Fox said on Monday.
“We’re only going by (information from) some witnesses.
“We believe he called a taxi. That’s what’s been relayed to us, but at such an early stage, we need to confirm all of these details.”
Inspector Fox said there was at least one male suspect but it was possible more than one offender was involved in the shooting.
He said the victim still had a bullet in his chest when he went in for surgery and the matter could become an attempted murder investigation.
