Michael Paul Bollard, also known as “Emmett” was born December 21,1951, in Laurens, Iowa. He was the first-born child to Tom and Darlys (Smith) Bollard. Mike attended Pocahontas Catholic. He was active in Boy Scouts for many years, achieving the Order of the Arrow. In 1966 Mike was the youngest of four boys to receive the Eagle Scout award – being the first group to receive this award in Pocahontas County. In 1970 he was Homecoming King, graduated with the last class of Pocahontas Catholic High School, and achieved first team all-conference unanimous selection as a first baseman. Emmett attended Waterloo Barber College. He had an internship in Iowa Falls and then began working as a barber in Iowa City. He later moved to Storm Lake where he met his love, Sandra Foreman of Galva, Iowa, and also owned a barber shop called Headquarters for Gentlemen until 1976. In June of 1978, Michael and Sandra were married in Galva. The couple then moved to Pocahontas and opened a barber shop and beauty salon together called The Locks Shop which they owned and operated for many years. In 1990, Mike was elected as Pocahontas County Recorder and was re-elected until he retired in December of 2020. He loved serving the citizens of Pocahontas County. During his time in office he was the Recorder’s Association President in the mid 1990s. Mike and Sandi were blessed with three children. Lindsay Collins was born in 1986, Nicholas Kendall in 1989, and Emily Anne in 1990.
Throughout the years, Mike contributed to the community in a variety of ways. He was a longstanding member of Knights of Columbus, a Chamber of Commerce member, an organizer of the Heritage Day’s Parades, participant in Princess City Players, and was instrumental in organizing the housing for the first ever RAGBRAI overnight stay in Pocahontas.
Mike was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching all Hawkeye events. He also enjoyed fishing and attending the famous PIGLIFT tournament, cooking, gardening, crossword puzzles, camping, and shooting the bull with his many friends. He was very proud of his family and most recently loved spending time with his two grandchildren. Mike was a firm believer in the Golden Rule – treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. He was a dedicated husband, father, & friend to many. He was known for his many one-liners and overall sense of humor.
Left to cherish his memories are wife Sandi; Lindsay (Erik) Campbell of Creston, IA;Nick Bollard of Fort Collins, CO; Emily (Tim) Richter of Bancroft, IA; two grandkids Madix & Sloane Richter; siblings Roger (Mary Kay) Bollard, Annette Bruns, Kath (Darv) Nomann, Paul (Sherry) Bollard, Jeannine (Gene) Goedert, Tom (Lynne) Bollard, and Marikay (Kevin) Kottke; brothers-in- law Rick (Marvie) Foreman, Steven Foreman, and sister-in-law Anne (Jerry) Andresen; many nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, aunts & cousins. Proceeding him in death are parents, Tom & Dar Bollard, father & mother-in-law Richard & LaBelle Foreman, niece, Courtney Foreman, and many other beloved family and friends.
He will be forever cherished and missed by all who knew him.
