The annual Catholic Media Association awards highlight the best of Catholic journalism in the U.S. and Canada. This year, the conference was held virtually instead of the planned Baltimore location. And this year, the Catholic Herald broke its previous record of 34 awards
with a total of 38. The accolades recognize everything from our print product, website, photos, stories, sports coverage, videos and ads.
Best of all, we won second place for the coveted award for Best Diocesan Newspaper. (Taking first was the Catholic
Sentinel in Portland, Ore., where our former staff writer Katie Scott works.)
The Catholic Herald’s website,
catholicherald.com, won second place for best newspaper website.
Individual excellence awards were presented for Writer of the Year where Zoey Maraist won third place and Leslie Miller won honorable mention. Videographer/video producer of the Year, second place, went to Matt Riedl.
Among the awards were first place honors for our photos — recall the beautiful photo of Bishop Michael F. Burbidge on the Easter Vigil lighting the Easter candle in an empty cathedral last spring. We won first place for a headline Leslie Miller wrote for a Catholic University story: Grad speech short
and tweet.
The media kit designed by Stacy Rausch, former production coordinator, captured first place honors, and several ads designed by Graphic Artist David Garcia took first place honors.
Then there are our videos by Matt Riedl and Jim Salitsky where four took first place, including one that went with our package Putting a face on COVID-19, and a tribute to the Class of 2020.
The diocesan communications office also did well with five awards, including a first place for the Bishop’s Christmas greeting video.
Managing Editor’s note: The awards are an impressive nod to all the fine work done by the Catholic Herald last year in the midst of all the challenges the coronavirus pandemic brought. Congratulations to the entire staff for all their hard work, their commitment
and professionalism. Consider the list below a pat on the back and a charge to continue our mission to tell the story of the Arlington diocese.
