ST. RAPHAEL’S — The Glengarry Fencibles Trust has received $98,572.02 from the federal government to support the ongoing restoration project at the Bishop’s House.

The former residence, which lies within the grounds of the former Catholic church ruins in the village, has been under restoration for several years now under the trust’s watchful eye. Attention has been paid to ensure masonry styles used in the work match the techniques used at the time of construction.

This grant will be used to support the costs of restoring three north-facing stone walls, whose original construction dates back to 1808.

Stormont—Dundas—South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan, and Glengarry—Prescott—Russell MP Francis Drouin recently visited the site to announce the federal funding and view the work completed to date.

The city has created a web page where residents can enter their water/sewer account number, estimate their annual water usage, and see a potential difference in their bill should water meters, and metered rates, be applied. The page does not include any information on how the estimated metered rates are calculated.

The city states it is considering a number of options to encourage water conservation, including a toilet rebate program, home visits/water-use audits, and non-residential facility audits and/or rebates. The second part of the city’s message this week was to ask people to complete a survey on the plan, any time before end of day on Friday, June 25.

The survey and additional information are available at haveyoursaycornwall.ca/water. Paper copies can be requested by calling 613-930-2787 ext. 2157.

Artists sought

The City of Cornwall put out a call for artists last week to contribute to five projects across the city.

The deadline for one project, submitting a design for business-district banners, passed on Tuesday. However the deadlines to apply to be hired for the other four projects lie in the days ahead.

That includes the painting of two new sea-can containers to be used for pop-up shops, deadline Thursday, May 27; a sea-can container that will be used to house the Seniors on Wheels equipment, deadline May 27; a mural for the riverfront basement entrance of the Cornwall Community Museum, deadline June 1; and, a mural for Diversity Cornwall located along a cement wall just south of the clock tower in Lamoureux Park, deadline of June 1.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals kicked off its Sweat for Pets fundraiser on Tuesday, which encourages people to set their own virtual fitness challenge and raise funds for the agency’s work.

The idea is to take on a challenge that combines a personal fitness activity of any kind with a desire to help the animals in need served by the OSPCA, including at its SDG Animal Centre. The campaign lasts for five weeks, and anyone wishing to participate, or support someone who is participating, can visit sweatforpets.ca for more information.

Ontario renovates

Applications for a popular program that provides financial assistance to some homeowners to support their renovation projects will open on June 7.

The Ontario Renovates program, managed by the City of Cornwall for all residents of the city and the United Counties of SDG, is aimed at low- and modest-income households, to support work that will make the home safer and/or more accessible for those living within it.

Various items showing proof of income, home ownership, etc. are required as part of the application.

The application form will be available online at cornwall.ca as of 4:30 p.m. on June 4. To obtain a paper copy, a pickup time can be scheduled by calling 613-933-6282, ext. 3315.
