Bishop’s Stortford Colts reached the semi-finals of both Hertfordshire cup competitions on Sunday.
The A and B teams won their quarter-final ties to move into the last four of their respective County Cup and County Plate competitions.
Current Bishop’s Stortford High School first XV captain Murray Davidson was the hero for the A team – captained for the first time by centre Joe Quinn – as they won a niggling battle with Rickmansworth-based Chess Valley 20-12.
Front-row star Davidson played at both prop and hooker as he scored two tries in the hard-fought win.
Oscar Wilson scored the other try, with a conversion and a penalty from Harry Clenshaw making up the score.
The valiant B side produced an outstanding effort against Welwyn – at times going down to 12 men – as they ran out 29-17 winners.
Dan Connor and Josh Perry grabbed a brace of tries each, along with a solo effort from Jude Tanfield. Tom Griffiths converted two of the five tries.
Joint coach Dave Macfie said: “These were another two outstanding performances from the entire squad.”
Both the under-14 Blues and Whites were also in action at the weekend, with the Blues triumphing 50-0 at Teddington.
Despite losing the breakdown battle, they won the fight of loose play. Alf Ward, Archie Tompset, Pip Hufton-Rees, Enzo Dargan, Sam Andrews, Harrison Perry, Charlie Hammick and Tom McKean all scored tries, with Oliver Mitchell securing five conversions.
The Whites succumbed 43-12 against a very strong Old Verulamians outfit.
They competed and won almost all of the early breakdown exchanges, but they just could not make the tackles count on the big home forwards.
Tries were scored by Aiden Byrne and Josh Shalloe, and Joe Griffiths kicked a conversion. There were strong performances in the forwards from Tom Lewis and James Frans.
Meanwhile, former Stortford youngster Francis Moore was named in the England under-20 side for their Six Nations warm-up win over Oxford University at the weekend.
Moore, who attended The Bishop’s Stortford High School, joined Stortford as an under-13 and is contracted to Saracens.
The England under-20 side were 33-12 up at half time and went on to triumph 54-24 against the Dark Blues at Iffley Road.
England get their Under-20 Six Nations campaign under way against Scotland in Edinburgh on February 4.
