Alex Bishop’s fourth year at Purdue Northwest University may be his best one yet.
At the ONU Bill Johnson Fall Invite at the Elks Country Club in St. Anne on Sept. 17-18, the Litchfield native shot a stellar 72 to start the tournament, then followed it with an 8-over 80 on day two to finish in a tie for 23rd with a 152. As a team, Purdue Northwest finished sixth out of 12 teams with a 629.
On Oct. 4-5, Bishop played in the Flyer Intercollegiate at Cog Hill Dubsdread Course in Lemont and tied for third overall. After shooting a 1-under-par 71 on day one, the Litchfield grad followed it up with a solid 3-over-par 75 to finish with a 146 for the tournament. As a team, Purdue Northwest finished 13th overall with a 635.
On Oct. 9-10, Purdue Northwest hosted their home tournament, the Mike Lalaeff Memorial Invite at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point, IN. Bishop scored another top 10 finish, rebounding from a 7-over 79 to move up five spots to seventh place after a 2-under 70 on day two. His 149 helped the Pride to a 628 as they finished third behind Parkland College and Chicago State.
The following weekend, Oct. 16-17, Bishop was in Augusta, MI, for the Davenport Panther Invitational at Stoatin Brae Golf Club. Leading his team once again, Bishop shot a 72 on day one and a 71 on day two for a 1-over-par 143 for the tournament, good enough for third place. As a team, Purdue Northwest finished ninth in the 12-team field with a 628.
After his success in Michigan, Bishop was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men’s Golfer of the Week, becoming the first Purdue Northwest men’s golfer to ever win the weekly award.
In the final tournament of the fall season, the Kentucky Wesleyan Fall Invite at The Pearl Club in Owensboro, KY, on Oct. 30-31, Bishop once again finished in the top 10, but was just one stroke out of fifth place and two from fourth. The senior shot a 76 on day one and was in 15th place, but improved his position with a even-par 72 on day two to jump into 10th.
Bishop’s performance on Sunday was the fifth time he shot par or better in the fall season, a new team record. As a team, Purdue Northwest was ninth out of 12 teams with a 637.
Bishop will now have some time off to fine tune his game before the spring season starts on Mar. 20-21 at the Saginaw Valley State Spring Invitational at Kearney Hills Links in Lexington, KY. The Pride will also play in the Klash in Kentucky at Perry Park Golf Resort on Mar. 26-27 and at the Panther Invitational back at The Pearl Club in Owensboro, KY on April 2-3, before the GLIAC Championships on April 15-18, at Gull Lake View Golf Club in Augusta, MI.
