A caseworker contracted by the organization, Nancy Caraballo, had been assigned to\u00a0Rodriguez\u2019s\u00a0case and was supposed to be checking on the boy, but she\u00a0falsified reports and took bribes in connection with a food stamp scheme instead.<\/p>\n

Caraballo had previously pleaded guilty to those charges and was sentenced to three years in prison, though she ultimately served only eight months. She\u00a0was ordered\u00a0to pay $240,000 in the civil case this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lawsuit had\u00a0argued in part\u00a0that the Catholic charity organization had failed\u00a0to properly train and supervise Caraballo\u00a0and thus failed to detect the false reports she had filed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Richard Blake, an attorney representing Catholic Charities Corporation in the case, told CNA on Wednesday that there is\u00a0\u201can active gag order prohibiting us from going into any detail or making any comments about the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0still another portion of the law that permits punitive damages,\u201d\u00a0he said. A court date\u00a0is set\u00a0for next week, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Catholic Charities did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
