Powers wrote that it has \u201clong been a tradition in the Diocese of Superior to honor the heritage of our Native Americans before major diocesan celebrations,\u201d including at his installation as bishop in 2016. Vigan\u00f2 himself attended that event, Powers pointed out, adding that \u201cnever in the last eight years\u201d had the archbishop expressed any concerns about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have at least expected the courtesy of a prior contact before any alleged public accusations of promoting Shamanism,\u201d the bishop wrote in the letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Arguing that Vigan\u00f2\u2019s rhetoric \u201cdoes not befit an Archbishop of the Catholic Church\u201d and that it \u201cbrings harm to the faithful\u201d entrusted to his care, Powers requested \u201ca public apology from [Vigan\u00f2] to me and my people.\u201d Vigan\u00f2 could not be reached for comment Saturday.<\/p>\n

Alleged illicit ordination<\/h3>\n

The Vatican\u2019s top diplomat to the U.S. from 2011 to 2016, Vigan\u00f2 made headlines in 2018 when he publicly accused Church leaders, including Pope Francis, of covering up the sexual abuse allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Italian archbishop made news again in 2020 when he\u00a0penned an open letter to then-President Donald Trump\u00a0expressing solidarity with Trump\u2019s ongoing battles with the \u201cdeep state,\u201d which the archbishop suggested had orchestrated the COVID-19 pandemic in a conspiracy to bring about a \u201cNew World Order\u201d with the support of some Catholic bishops.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
