As the world celebrates the first International Day to Protect Education from Attack on Wednesday, Pope Francis appeals to the international community to ensure educational structures are protected from attacks. <\/p>\n
\u201cI invite you to pray for students who are seriously deprived of the right to education due to war and terrorism,\u201d he said during his weekly General Audience of Wednesday in the Vatican. <\/p>\n
\u201cI urge the international community to do its utmost so that the structures that must protect young students be respected,\u201d he said, speaking in Italian. \u201cMay efforts that guarantee safe environments for their education not wain, above all in situations of humanitarian crises,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
UN<\/h2>\n Meanwhile, the United Nations has also called for a safe environment for students. \u201cAs the world fights to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, children and youth in conflict zones remain among the most vulnerable to its devastating impact,\u201d said UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres. \u201cWe must ensure our children have a safe and secure environment in which to learn the knowledge and skills they need for the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
UNESCO<\/h2>\n The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also added its voice insisting, \u201cschools must remain safe places, free of conflict and violence\u201d. \u201cOur collective future as well as the achievements of all development goals depend on it,\u201d said UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay. \u201cSafeguarding the right to education for all,\u201d she said, \u201ccontributes to the achievement of sustainable development and nurtures the international community\u2019s decades-long gains towards peace, economic prosperity, and social inclusion worldwide.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
UNICEF<\/h2>\n According to the UN Children\u2019s Fund, UNICEF, \u201cAttacks on schools are a violation of humanity and basic decency.
