Multiple wildfires are ravaging the Los Angeles area and causing significant damage, since the fires broke out 7 January.

One of the most devastating losses was Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Pacific Palisades, where only the church’s frame remained 8 January.

The church, a landmark in an affluent neighbourhood known for hosting celebrities, was built in the 1950s.

The Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires forced the closure of over 60 Catholic schools due to fire proximity, poor air quality, wind damage and power outages.

Catholic school officials, including Superintendent Paul Escala, prioritized safety, with some schools remaining open to provide routine and care for students during the crisis.

The fires, fueled by dry Santa Ana winds, have burned thousands of acres and destroyed around 1,000 homes.

Two civilian deaths have been reported, and many residents have suffered significant injuries.

Local leaders, including Archbishop José H Gomez, urged prayers for those affected. “My heart goes out to our neighbors who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Let’s pray for them and let’s pray for our firefighters and first responders,” he said.
