Retune has been waiting a long time to bring back its live shows. The last time we hosted a gig was in February 2020 and there was no way we could have predicted that our next concert would be 19 months later. But here we are.
On Sunday September 5, The Horn at the Half Moon in North Street will host an acoustic set from The Kazans, with support from Charlie Turner, Jay Williams and Scarlet Thomas.
It’s an all-Stortford affair and is set to be a great night. As ever, the gig is free entry, with audience members encouraged to pay what they want or can to Retune’s charity, which inspires young people to improve their mental wellbeing through creative outlets such as music and the arts.
Tom Ryder, Joe Hazell, Tom Casson and George Sydes formed The Kazans at The Bishop’s Stortford High School 15 years ago – we’ve been playing music together for half a lifetime (shock horror).
The band were one of the last to sell out The Square in Harlow, in 2014, prior to its closure, and since then guitarist Joe Hazell went on to a successful career as musical director for southern rock outfit Curse of Lono. The Retune audience can expect a mixture of songs from the band’s back catalogue, ranging from rock to folk to blues.
Charlie Turner is sure to bring a storming set. Although she predominantly focuses on songwriting, she is a formidable performer adept on both guitar and piano. In recent years she has worked alongside Nashville writers, earning herself several syncs with established artists.
Jay Williams was one of the first performers to play for Retune and he appeared at the first Retune In June, in 2019. Another alumnus of TBSHS, he writes songs that are full of meaning and melodically inventive. This gig falls just in time for the release of his new EP.
Former Herts and Essex High School girl Scarlet Thomas, though pursuing a career in musical theatre, is a bona fide artist with a fantastic vocal tone. She is still in her teens but belts out her songs with a force that belies her years.
This is a night that deserves a sizeable audience, so don’t miss out. Doors open at 6pm and the music concludes at 9pm. There is no room quite like The Long Room at the Half Moon for enjoying intimate performances. What better way to welcome back live acoustic music.
