The Making of Hawkeye reveals Hailee Steinfeld bonded with key characters off-camera, which helped the chemistry on-screen for her Kate Bishop.

Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye details how the Disney+ series cleverly mixes a ton of action with Christmas cheer. But apart from how the narrative was crafted, this hour-long documentary also provides key behind-the-scenes insight into how Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate handled things off-camera, shaping the story of how she’d become his sidekick.

Interestingly, The Making of Hawkeye reveals the spirit of unity and mentorship existed off-screen, and in the process, it made Kate’s chemistry with a couple important characters so much easier to translate when the cameras started rolling.

This first bond was between Renner and Steinfeld, with the former deciding to become her mentor as she made her first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Steinfeld was an automatic pick by studio president Kevin Feige for the role, needing just one meeting to seal the deal. But despite starring in the Bumblebee movie, she knew it would be a daunting task, given the high expectations. Luckily, the veteran actor made it easier by taking Steinfeld under his wing to alleviate pressure.

In the documentary, she admitted this guardianship made it easier to adjust, offering “a sense of comfort, knowing that this is a world he has been in for 10 years.” Renner absolutely enjoyed the role as well, something Steinfeld felt came natural to him given his experience in the industry. He confirmed “the chaos of schedules,” and all the moving parts on these productions could be overwhelming, so he ensured he created an environment of trust for them to work within.

Seeing them joking with each other during fight sequences and especially the famous New York car chase on the bridge, it was clear this relationship helped create a true father-daughter atmosphere and “an amazing dynamic,” according to Steinfeld. It explains fully why the scenes in which Clint brought her to his family’s farm to live really glowed with sentiment and togetherness.

The second bond off-camera that was just as genuine was between Steinfeld and Jolt, the three-year old Golden Retriever who played Lucky, the Pizza Dog. Throughout the series, as much as the pooch liked Clint, it was always playing with and slobbering on Kate, which was something Steinfeld made sure to cultivate before they even filmed together.

Jolt’s trainers confirmed Steinfeld gave the pup a bunch of cookies and showed her a lot of affection, playing with her whenever she could. It led to them greeting each other, displaying love and bonding, even when they weren’t doing scenes, explaining why they became “good friends” outside of the show.

Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye, as well as all six episodes of Hawkeye are now available on Disney+.

I’m a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you’re bored by now, then you also don’t want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I’ve written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I’ve scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I’d love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I’m on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
