The US Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against the University of Vermont Medical Center, alleging it forces staff members who object to abortion on religious grounds to participate in abortion procedures. In a written statement, Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband, of the Civil Rights Division, says in part, “…this kind of indecent coercion violates everything this country stands for.” The director of the Conscience Project, Andrea Picciotti-Bayer, joins to discuss the case further. Picciotti-Bayer explains what the University of Vermont Medical Center is alleged to have done and what its response has been. The director also shares her insight on what the “Church Amendments” are and how they apply to this situation.
