A deadly earthquake in Myanmar 28 March has left nearly 3,000 people dead, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
Humanitarian organisations such as Catholic Relief Services are working tirelessly to provide immediate relief, including food, water, medicine and shelter.
CRS Country Manager Cara Bragg highlighted the long-term impact of the 7.7 magnitude quake, which has devastated homes, businesses and crops, leading to concerns about widespread hunger.
The earthquake struck Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, and caused significant damage. Communication and transportation difficulties initially hampered relief efforts, but connectivity has since improved, allowing aid to reach affected areas, according to Bragg.
Despite challenges from Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict, CRS continues to partner with local groups, like Caritas, to provide support.
Bragg expressed hope for recovery, noting the resilience of the people and urging donations to aid in the rebuilding process.
