Cathedrals in Liverpool, Birmingham, Middlesbrough, and Southwark will dedicate a Mass this weekend to peace, with a Pax Christi resources stall at each one.

The 2023 Peace Sunday in England and Wales is on 15 January.

In Liverpool, Pax Christi President Archbishop Malcolm McMahon will preside at 11am Mass for Peace. In Birmingham the 11:30 Mass will be dedicated to peace and Ann Farr, Chair of Pax Christi England and Wales, will speak at the end of the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. At Middlesbrough and Southwark the 10am Masses will be dedicated to peace.

Each year Pax Christi supports the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales in promoting the Pope’s World Peace Day message of 1 January. This year’s theme is: “No one can be saved alone: Combating Covid-19 together, embarking together on paths of peace.”

Pax Christi has produced a variety of online and printed materials, including liturgy resources, which will help parishes, schools, communities and families to celebrate Peace Sunday.

Collections are invited towards the work of Pax Christi England and Wales.

The National Board of Catholic Women (NBCW), National Justice and Peace Network and Cafod are among those who have put out peace messages and prayers.

Margaret Clark, president of NBCW, said, “Women of the world unite in prayer along with all humanity for peace in the world.”

She invited members to join her in “taking 10 minutes each day to pray for peace and unity for those in Ukraine and the rest of the world”.

For young people, there is now a four-week countdown for submissions to the 2023 Schools Competition of the Columban Missionaries in Britain and Ireland.

The title is: “Building Peaceful Futures” and entries close on 10 February 2023. The competition is targeted at students aged 13-18 years old who are invited to demonstrate an awareness of conflict and peacemaking in the world today through the submission of either a written article or an original image.

Students are being asked to do their own research and spotlight people, communities or organisations who are trying to make the world a better place for everyone by building peaceful futures.

High-profile judges from the world of journalism have been secured, including Ruth Gledhill of The Tablet. Cash prizes will be awarded.
