Cardinal Otunga: 6 Kenyan Catholic Bishops Who Were Buried Inside Churches

  • The Catholic Church has a tradition of burying their bishops in crypts below the cathedrals they served.
  • Only top Catholic prelates are accorded this burial, and there are numerous of them in Kenya

Top Catholic clergy are buried in crypts inside the churches they served, in a long tradition observed by the church.

In Kenya, around six clerics were buried in the same manner.

Ndingi Mwana a’Nzeki

The retired Catholic archbishop passed away in Nairobi in March 2020. He retired in 20027 and was ailing for some time before his death.

Ndingi was interred in a crypt located under the Holy Family Basilica Church. The crypt features blue and pink ambient lighting, while the walls are white.

In 2017, Archbishop John Njenga was also buried in the crypt.

Cornelius Korir

The bishop, ordained in 1982 passed away in 2017.

Korir’s coffin was placed inside a 2.9 metre by 1.225 metre tomb at the Grotto of Mary.

It is room inside the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Eldoret.

Nicodemus Kirima and Caesar Gatimu

Kirima, who was the Nyeri archbishop had a myriad health complications as a result of his failing kidney.

He passed away in 2007 and was buried at Our Lady of Consolata Cathedral in Nyeri town.

Kirima was buried in a tomb next to his predecessor Caesar Gatimu.

Maurice Otunga

He served as the archbishop of Nairobi from 1971 until his resignation in 1997.

Pope Paul VI elevated him into the cardinalate in 1973.

The cardinal passed away in 2003 and was interred inside a Chapel at Resurrection Garden in Nairobi.

Michael Mithamo King’ori was ordained as the first blind priest in the country assisted by Anthony Muheria at Kiamuiru Catholic Parish.

“His is a story of with God, all things are possible. Congratulations to Fr Michael Mithamo and gratitude,” Radio Maria Kenya announced.
