Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone authorized a monthly mass in the traditional rite at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco. He personally recited prayers with the faithful, in reparation for the abuses committed against the Holy Eucharist.
The decision to hold a monthly Tridentine Rite Mass in the cathedral predated Pope Francis’s July 16 motu proprio, Traditionis Custodes, which placed drastic restrictions on the use of the traditional Mass.
But it was in response to this papal act that Archbishop Cordileone announced that he would authorize the continuation of the traditional mass in his diocese, in accordance with the motu proprio: the bishops have the authority to make such decisions.
The monthly mass will be celebrated on the first Wednesday of the month at 3 p.m. Maggie Gallagher, Executive Director of the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Worship and Divine Music, expressed her gratitude: “It is an auspicious hour for this Mass, which recalls the moment when Our Lord Jesus Christ died for to save us from sin and death,” she said.
The first mass was celebrated on Wednesday August 4, on the feast of St. Dominic, in the Dominican use.
Archbishop Cordileone told CNA on July 16 that “the Mass is a miracle in all its forms: Christ comes to us in the flesh in the appearances of bread and wine. What matters is unity under Christ. Therefore, the Traditional Latin Mass will continue to be available here in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and will be provided in response to the legitimate needs and desires of the faithful.”
Pray for the Bishops
Bishop Cordileone became personally involved in praying with the faithful to redress the abuses committed against the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.
He further pledged to continue this prayer with his diocese, until “the proceedings of the United States Bishops’ Conference (USCCB) at the end of this year.”
It should be remembered that Archbishop Cordileone was an ardent defender of the drafting of a document containing a clear teaching on the Eucharist by the USCCB.
In a statement provided to CNA in May, Archbishop Cordileone said he was “deeply saddened by the growing public acrimony between the bishops.”
He added: “Those who do not want to publish a document on Eucharistic coherence should be prepared to debate the issue objectively and fairly with their brother bishops, rather than attempting to derail the process.”
After discussion, the USCCB voted in June to adopt several measures, including the drafting of a teaching document on the Eucharist.
