One of last year’s A-level students at The Bishop’s Stortford High School has won an award for excellence from the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) for coming joint top in the country in one of his exams.

Luke Hale unexpectedly received a letter this week telling him that he and another candidate had got the highest marks out of 13,224 candidates who sat the Pearson’s Edexcel A-level geography paper last summer.

Luke, who is now at Bristol University studying politics and international relations, receives a prize of an Amazon voucher and a certificate from the RGS, the learned society and professional body for geography in the UK. Founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical sciences, it has 16,000 members.

Luke said: “I am very surprised and happy to have received this award.”

TBSHS geography subject leader Jo Winterburn said: “Luke always had an excellent grasp of geography, but we were thrilled for him to hear that he has been recognised by the Royal Geographical Society for this prestigious award. We’re very proud to have had Luke study geography in our department and to have played a part in his success.”

Headteacher Dale Reeve said: “Luke was a superb student with a great deal of ability and fantastic attitude towards his studies. He certainly benefited from the excellent teaching and great support from our geography department and is another example of the academic success our students achieve. Geography was one of a host of subjects achieving superb A-level results in the summer, though Luke’s achievement is right up there among the very best.”
