ASIA/INDONESIA – A new App for young people on the occasion of the Jubilee of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Jakarta (Agenzia Fides) – The Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Indonesia are launching a new App dedicated to adolescents and young people, on the occasion of the celebration of the Jubilee of their birth in Indonesia. Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, Archbishop of Jakarta and President of the Bishops’ Conference, celebrated a solemn mass in the Ursuline Chapel in Jakarta to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the presence of the PMS in the archipelago, known here as “Biro Nasional Karya Kepausan Indonesia” ( BN KKI).

On the occasion of the event, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo expressed his deep appreciation for the PMS, who are worthy of promoting the apostolate for spreading the faith and for supporting the structures and life of the Church.

The Cardinal underlined that the 50th anniversary of the PMS, which coincides with the liturgical feast of Christ the King, offers a clear signal to all the faithful: “The main message of this celebration is to bring hope to all people. The feast of Christ the King is a celebration of hope. Our hope is in fact based on faith and the presence of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Indonesia aims to promote hope”.

It is in this context and with this objective that the PMS have officially released an application called “Digi SEKAMI”, intended for young people.

Fr. Markus Nur Widipranoto, National Director of the PMS in Indonesia, explains to Fides that “Digi SEKAMI is the result of teamwork, to encourage the development of faith especially among children and adolescents”, given that SEKAMI corresponds, in Indonesian, to the work of Missionary Childhood, one of the four Pontifical Mission Societies.

The App promotes spiritual growth with quotes from the Gospel, stories, words from Pope Francis and missionary projects. The PMS in Indonesia were already present in 1919 as an extension of the Dutch PMS. “During the 1971 Synod of Indonesian Bishops, the Pontifical Mission Societies, which already existed and operating, were officially adopted as integrated organizations within the Bishops’ Conference of Indonesia”, Father Widiprano to explains to Fides. Years later, with the approval of all Indonesian Bishops, the PMS were introduced and established in each diocese, “with the main task of promoting mission and missionary responsibility towards all Indonesian Catholics”, recalls the priest.
