For over 70 years, Anthony Ousu Edathil rowed thousands across Kerala’s Kadamakkudy Islands — often during medical emergencies, storms, and late nights. Affectionately called ‘Ousu Chettan,’ the Catholic boatman became a lifeline for isolated communities, despite never learning to swim. At 99, he enjoys tea, family, and the respect of villagers who named Kochi’s first private electric boat after him — ‘The Legend of Ousu’. This is the story of resilience, faith, and service that turned a humble oarsman into a local legend who is believed to have roved a million kilometers and ferried six million passengers in seven decades.
